WICHITA FALLS, TX (TNN) -The Wichita Falls Area Food Bank needed to clear out it’s freezer so they took to Facebook to get the word out.
Kara Nickens the CEO of the Wichita Area Food Bank was working to make room for a new shipment of frozen food items expected this week so she posted to Facebook. Her post said people receiving benefits like SSI and snap could come by and grab a box. Little did she know that people would show up in droves.
“We posted on our social media and we had a great response of people sharing we had 300 boxes pre-made and we are going to see if we have a little bit more. We are going to give out everything we have. We are so thankful to everybody that helped us get the word out, so we can distribute to those in need.”
The original plan was to give away the boxes of frozen foods but after just a couple of hours they had already given out over half of those boxes. A Food bank volunteer said that people were lined up ways before the give-a- way started.
Nickens says that this is a very rare event. She had no idea when they will do it again.
“We had to make room and we didnt want the food to go to waste and all ofour other pantries are at capacity,” said Nickens.
Nickens also said the government shutdown has not affect them as of yet. The food items they are receiving this week had already been budgeted for.
The Food bank ended the food give-a-way at 6 pm with a final total of 406 boxes given out.
