Deputies discover 178 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop

WICHITA FALLS, TX (TNN) - Wichita County Sheriff Deputies discovered numerous duffel bags filled with marijuana during a traffic stop on US-287 near Iowa Park.

Deputies stopped the 2019 Ford Expedition on March 1 after witnessing it following other vehicles too closely, performing an unsafe lane change and not slowing for a stopped emergency vehicle.

Suspicion arose when sheriff deputies noticed six large duffel bags in the back of the SUV. Court documents say that type bag is often used to transport large amounts of marijuana.

The driver, 29 year old Robert Johnson of Ohio refused deputies permission to search the SUV. A K9 deputy was already at the traffic stop an alerted to the Ford.

Court documents say deputies discovered 178 pounds of vacuum sealed marijuana during a probable cause search.

Johnson has been charged with Possession of Marijuana over 50 pounds, a 2nd degree felony.

His bond was initially set at $25,000. As of Thursday afternoon, Johnson no longer appears on the Wichita County Jail inmate roster.
