15 affected after chemical release in Tulsa

Associated Press - June 4, 2010 1:25 PM ET

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - An accidental hazardous chemical release at a Tulsa trucking company has affected 15 people, sending at least 1 of them to an area hospital.

Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Bill French says a 55-gallon drum of chloromethyl naphthalene (NAF-thuh-len), a corrosive liquid, was punctured by a piece of metal about 10 a.m. Friday at the Old Dominion Freight Line facility.

An Emergency Medical Services Authority spokesman says a 46-year-old man suffered the most serious injury and was taken to a hospital in fair condition.

Some of those affected went through the decontamination process for superficial exposure. All of them likely will be taken to area hospitals for precautionary observation and evaluation.
