ESCAPE FROM ANNEX: Vernon College Lockdown

Posted: Updated:

Around 5:00pm Thursday employees from the Vernon College Skills and Training Center were released after being locked down in the building all day.

Vernon college is in the same building as the Wichita County Jail Annex. The annex is where four inmates escaped this morning.

Students were not in the building at the time of the lock down because classes do not start until next week, but about nine faculty and staff and six construction workers were trapped inside.

"Well for our facility as soon as we got word at approximately 8:30 we instituted what we call lock down, there's a hand full of doors in the facility that we operate and our director Mark Holcomb made sure all the doors were locked down and that no one could gain entrance into the building," say Dusty Johnston, President of Vernon College

President Johnston says the school has been working on a number of emergency procedures to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff. During a lock down emergency phones are used in every classroom and e-mails are sent to all students, faculty and staff. Written procedures also say faculty and students must lock the door, locking themselves in the classrooms and stay there until notified to do otherwise.

"Fortunately for us we're in between semesters, in the building it was only the nine faculty and staff and about six construction workers it was pretty easy for us to initiate the lock down," said President Johnston.
