ESCAPE FROM ANNEX: The Search

Posted: Updated:

Recapturing three of the escaped inmates was a team effort today.  At least ten different agencies played a part in the search.

"This was a very quick response from all these agencies to come and aid us, assist, and we couldn't have done this without the teamwork we have with all these agencies," said Wichita County Sheriff David Duke.

Only hours after the escape, dogs from the Roach Unit in Childress and mounted units from Allred had success in finding three of the escapees.  Jimmy Hughes, James McClendon, and Daniel Ramos were all in the brush close to Ross Ranch Road and FM 2393.

"The dogs tracked 'em, and with the DPS helicopter overhead, he was able to point us in the right direction to follow the dogs," said Clay County Sheriff Kenny Lemons.

"All three of them are caught now.  Three of the four.  He's in a different area that we're looking.  He's not out here with these guys," Duke said shortly after 1:30 this afternoon.

The mobile command center was set up near a ranch home Duke says belongs to the in-laws of one of the escapees.  At least one woman was taken into custody for her involvement in helping the inmates escape.

Sheriff Lemons says all the agencies involved, from sheriff's offices to Texas Rangers, played an important role.

"It's nobody's credit, it's everybody's credit.  We all work together really well in North Texas," he said.

McClendon, Hughes, and Ramos were all taken to Clay County to have their rights read to them.  They have since been returned to Wichita Falls.
