String of Meth Busts Keep Deputies Busy

Posted: Updated:

It has been a busy week for Texoma Law Enforcement. Investigators have been tied-up with a string of Meth busts. It all started Thursday, December 29 with 2 high speed chases and 3 arrests. Over the New Year's weekend several other arrests were made. On Jan 3, 5 people were arrested at a home in the 2800 block of Featherston. Wednesday, an early morning raid on a house in the 1600 block of Clover Lane netted another 4 suspects behind bars.

All together, the number of suspects in the Wichita County Jail on charges directly related to Meth is quite high.  Of the more than 600 inmates in the jail, more than 110 of them are charged with a crime directly-related to Meth.

Wichita County Sheriff David Duke says there are several factors that come into play when considering the week's busts. "Some of these cases are people that obviously we knew and that we had been watching we have open investigation cases on our drug division of the DA's office or other people are watching them attempting to try and get something on them," said Duke.

That was the case with the bust on Featherston. Deputies were watching the house, and saw a vehicle pull away in the early morning hours. The car broke several traffic laws and was pulled-over. Deputies say there was evidence of a Meth lab. The two people inside were arrested, after questioning them, investigators were able to get a search warrant for the home. Several other people inside were arrested after the search.

Wednesday's bust on Clover Lane was a similar situation. The homeowner, Gary Wayne Meeks was out on bond after Deputies say he was caught with liquid Meth at the same house in November 2010. A deputy driving by around 4 a.m. smelled what he thought to be a Meth lab. The SWAT Team was activated, and armed with a search warrant, they raided the property. 4 people, including Meeks were arrested.

Another force behind the wave of busts is surveillance techniques.  "There are a lot of other active things that we do behind the public eye that is not seen, trying to get some of these folks. Whether its new ways of surveillance that were doing more efforts in targeting manufacture people that are doing a substantial amount of drug trafficking," said Duke. The Sheriff says that his Office is being proactive in the fight against the Crystal Meth Comeback.

Despite the wave of arrests, the war is far from over. "We are still deeply entrenched," said Duke. While deputies work to combat the problem, Duke admits they are just scratching the surface."However for the 4, 5 or 6 busts we got in the last week or so, there's another 25 or 50 of them out there," he said.
