A Winter Storm Warning will go into effect Thursday morning at 6:00AM and last through Friday evening at 6:00PM.
You should have already made preparations in advance of the impending winter storm. There is no threat of winter weather tonight, but we will drop below freezing by early Thursday.
The forecast models are gaining a bit of consistency on how this event will play out. There could be a wave of freezing rain early Thursday. With temperatures at or below freezing, this could cause travel issues if it is heavy enough. What I am most concerned about is Thursday night into Friday morning.
A heavy band of sleet & freezing rain is expected to move across the area beginning Thursday night. As this wave of precipitation moves out Friday morning, it could end as snow. There is another (smaller) chance for light snow Saturday night into Sunday.
The main focus is how bitterly cold this airmass is. Once we drop below freezing tonight, it is very possible that we may not get back above freezing until Sunday or Monday. Saturday morning could feature our coldest readings in a few years. I am expecting single digits area wide with some spots maybe close to zero across SW Oklahoma.
Travel is not advised Thursday or Friday and it could still be hazardous over the weekend, due to the ice sticking around.
Stay with 6 as we follow this winter storm and its impacts.
