Pilots Bring a Slice of Texoma History

Texomans were treated to a slice of their past Saturday. Pilots squared off in a bombing demo competition at Call Field.

The pilots flew a 1916 World War I Jenny Trainer aircraft.

The contestants dropped flour sacks at a target. That simulated training exercises pilots in Wichita Falls ran years before Sheppard Air Force Base was even a thought.

"It commemorates that huge event, that resulted, eventually, in Sheppard Air Force base," said Robert Seabury, Chairman of the Call Field Committee. "We started training these young pilots to fly military aircraft. It began 90 years ago, right here in Wichita Falls."

David Martin won today's competition. He dropped his simulated bomb within 15 feet of the target. The demo was put on by the Museum of North Texas History.
