Police: Gunman Holds People Hostage in Discovery building

SILVER SPRING, MD. (AP) - Police in suburban Washington say they're talking with a gunman who has taken hostages at the headquarters of the Discovery Channel networks.

Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger says the gunman has what he described as a "small number of hostages" but he did not say how many. He also did not say what the man wants or whether anyone has been injured.

He says most of the 1,900 people who work in the building were able to get out safely.

He says at 1 p.m. the gunman entered through the main entrance of the building wearing what seemed to be metallic canister devices strapped to his front and back and waving a handgun.
