Mother Heads To Prison For The Death Of Her Daughter

New developments in the state's attempts to seek justice in the death of a five year old girl.

The girl's mother, 23 year old Kristina Earnest has been sentenced to fifty years in prison. She pleaded guilty today to a first degree felony offense of Injury to a Child by Omission.

In July of 2009, Earnest and her then boyfriend, Tommy Castro, took five year old Katie's body to Wilbarger General Hospital. They claimed the girl drowned in the bathtub, but an autopsy revealed the girl died of blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Earnest later confessed to hitting Katie. She and Castro were then each charged with Capital Murder in July of this year.

However, prosecutors say they have good reason to believe the initial statement of Earnest was false and that the child's death was not caused directly by her actions. Earnest struck a plea bargain for the lesser charge.

In court, Katie's grandmother, Shelly Blevins, read a victim impact statement. She also spoke exclusively with Newschannelsix in February of this year as part of our in depth coverage on the case. Earnest will testify against Castro as part of her plea deal.
