Countdown To Chilean Miner Rescue

In less than 24 hours trapped miners in Chile could soon be brought back to the surface.

Crews hope to use a rescue capsule as early as midnight to begin pulling 33 Chileans miners to safety one by one.

Each 2,000 ft. trip will last about 20 minutes, taking up to 48 hours to hoist all of them up.

The men will be given dark glasses to avoid damaging their eyesight and the first few brought up will most likely be the fittest.

"We have to follow a very precise protocol for the treatment of these miners as soon as they put one foot out of the cage," the Chilean Minister Of Mining said.

Once the miners reach the surface, they will immediately be given medical checkups before being flown to a hospital for a more thorough examination.
