For weeks the Rider Raiders have been waiting for a rematch with Denton Ryan. Saturday they got it.
A big group of Roho Nation was on hand to watch this one in Denton's own home stadium as Coach Jim Garfield and his Raiders played in the Elite Eight of Class 4A Division I.
In the first quarter Ryan was threatening when Tyler Kotulek came untouched and sacked Ryan quarterback Nash Knight at the Rider 25 yard line, holding Ryan to a field goal and a 3-0 lead.
But on the next drive, on 4th and one, Kaylon Alexander burst through the Rider line on his way to 39-yard touchdown for Denton Ryan, putting Rider down 10-0.
Rider dusted off the hook-and-lateral play to get some offense on their next drive, with J.T. Barrett finding John Hatch, who pitched to Deron Royster for a nice gain, but they couldn't score on the drive.
Later we saw some more Rider defense, with Knight losing the ball on a fumble recovered by Cody O'Donnell.
But in the end Ryan's Raiders were just too strong for Rider. They led 17-0 at the half and cruised to a 46-15 win, ending Rider's season at 9-5, but it was still a great year for the Raiders.
The Holliday Eagles faced Idalou at Abilene Wylie in a battle of 9-3 teams on 8-game win streaks.
Early in the game it looked good for the Eagles, as Dylon Hall came up with a big stop on fourth down to get the ball in the hands of the Holliday offense, and they responded with a long drive that led to a Bryce Davis field goal from 29 yards out to grab a 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately that was all the scoring for the Eagles Saturday. They gained just 145 yards against a fierce Wildcat defense and the Eagles were eliminated 20-3. Their season ends at 9-4.
One team did pick up a win tonight. The #2 Throckmorton Greyhounds advanced to the Six-Man Division I State Championship Saturday night with a 70-20 win over Aquilla.
The Greyhounds will meet #1 Garden City, who upset the then-top-ranked 'Hounds in last year's State Semifinal, in the State Championship game next Saturday at 7 PM out at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
