Multiple agencies were called out to a blaze at Lake Arrowhead State Park Thursday afternoon. High winds threatened to blow the fire across FM 2606 as firefighters arrived on scene.
Lake Arrowhead Fire Chief Mike Hall says if they had arrived just a few minutes later, things could have gotten much worse. "Everything is so dry, the humidity is down, the wind's blowing. Just one little spark can grow really big really fast."
A park worker on a riding lawnmower sparked the flames, when tall grass hit something hot on the mower. Crews had the fire extinguished within thirty minutes.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office was on scene with the Lake Arrowhead Volunteer Fire Department.
The worker was mowing in preparation for a prescribed burn and fire training exercise scheduled for next week.
