The Kay Yeager Coliseum at the Wichita Falls Multi-Purpose Events Center has a big upgrade. Workers installed a new $86,000 basketball floor. While the amount may sound high, MPEC Comptroller Bill Dixon says the floor will pay for itself.
In the past the MPEC has rented a floor from the American Airlines Center for basketball events. That cost $10,000 a night.
The floor is modular and goes together in about a hour. While it may not take too long to assemble, it should be durable enough to endure many years of events. "I'm hoping this thing will last even longer than I'm even employed with the City of Wichita Falls. I'm hoping 50 years would be a good number," said Dixon.
The Harlem Globetrotters will be the first to use the new floor when they tip-off Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Dixon hopes the floor won't just be for the team's yearly exhibition, but that it will also draw other events to town. "You can have all kinds of tournaments you can maybe draw in other cities to have high school tournaments in here those kinds of events would be great to have in this coliseum," he said.
