Just how many inches of snow / ice are we looking forward to here in Wichita Falls proper?
Monday January 31, 2011 2:02 Jim
2:03
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Jim: We are forecasting 5-10 inches of snow, however actual snow will be closer to the 5 inches. Sleet and Ice is also possible before 3 am which might cause power outages

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
In your honest opinion, do you think this will mimic the 2009 Blizzard?
Monday January 31, 2011 2:03 Guest
2:04
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Conditions will be similar but the worst should occur before sunrise. With high winds and extreme cold... it will be an awful day to be outside. Stay inside if you can.

Will it be dangerous to drive tomorrow
Monday January 31, 2011 2:04 Jessica
2:05
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Very dangerous, especially if we get ice first. Temperatures will not reach above freezing until Friday. So the roads could be bad through Thursday.

How far south will it get?
Monday January 31, 2011 2:06 Chris
2:06
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
All of Texoma will be impacted. Their is a concern that icing could be worse the further south you go. Places like Graham and Bowie could see a decent icing.

Monday January 31, 2011 2:08 Guest

Monday January 31, 2011 2:08 Jessica
2:09
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:

Monday January 31, 2011 2:09 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
2:10
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
The other concern is the cold air behind this system. Colder air than the Christmas Blizzard. Wind chills below freezing for much of Tuesday and early Wednesday. Stay inside if you can! If you must be outside wear plenty of layers. If you drive make sure to bring bottled water and blankets in case you get stuck!

We are not forecasting temperatures to rise above freezing until Friday afternoon. The wind will die down by late Wednesday. But it will be COLD. Wind chills below zero and actual lows in the single digits! Make sure to protect pipes. This is definitely pipe bursting weather

The plan is at 4 o'clock that this will be replaced with our twitter blog at 4PM. News and weather people will fill that with information. Once things get serious after midnight start using #FebFreeze as a hashtag and we can all communicate what we are seeing. Your storm reports are appreciated!

how likely is that that schools/businesses might be closed from Tuesday-Thursday?
Monday January 31, 2011 2:54 Brad
2:56
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
I would say Tuesday very likely and depending on the efficiency of the road crews Wednesday and Thursday is up in the air. Mother nature wont help with any melting because of extremely cold air.

with it being so warm the st couple days will that affect the snow accumulation on the roads or will is be cold enough to re freeze or keep it from melting
Monday January 31, 2011 3:05 kyle
3:06
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Kyle: It will at first, but the snow and sleet should fall heavy enough so that there is no time to melt and the new snow will accumulate on top of the old snow. it hopefully will prevent freezing rain from becoming ice though.

Whats the difference in a Winter Advisory, Watch and Warning?
Monday January 31, 2011 3:06 Guest
3:08
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Winter Storm Watch is issued if a winter storm is expected 24-48 hours away. Winter Storm warning is if a major winter storm is expected within 24 hours. Usually more than 4 inches of snow or a combination of snow and ice. Winter weather advisory is slightly less than Winter storm warning. Typically less than 4 inches of snow.

You say that the winds will be very cold behind this system, my kids' bedroom windows face the North, I have blankets over the blinds right now to keep the cold away, is there anything else I can do right now keep their rooms warmer? Especially the one on the Northwest corner of the house??

Monday January 31, 2011 3:11 Guest

Hard to say for sure. A lot of times you have to do what's called nowcasting and update things as they develop
Monday January 31, 2011 3:12 KenJohnson
3:12
KenJohnson:
We are forecasting 5-10 in places with 3-6 in others. Some places may get more while others get a little less
Monday January 31, 2011 3:12 KenJohnson
3:13
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Think of a thunderstorm forecast. We know the general area but not the exact location. Some areas will see very heavy snow and 20 miles away may just see light stuff. It is very difficult to pinpoint the actual total for each city.
Monday January 31, 2011 3:13 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
3:14
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
You have to remember, typically: 1 inch of rainfall = 10 inches of snow. So just a few tenths of an inch of difference between lets say Electra and WF could mean several inches of snow difference!

We are going to get hit pretty good. It is entirely possible we get less than 4 or 5 inches of snow, but the winds will be nasty and blowing it around to where travel will be near impossible

is it expected to be snowing heavy enough that if they treat the roads and plow that it will cover the road still? what are the temps expected to be when the snow is supposed to be the heaviest

Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Temps in the 20s and moving into the teens. And yes, it could snow hard enough to where the roads become covered still. But hopefully they can do a good enough job to where treating them a second time will be enough to make travel doable

I do believe this will be a serious event. It is a very difficult forecast. 50-100 miles west of us will not be bad at all, so there is still hope to dodge the worst of the storm, but it does not look likely
