[Comment From LarryLarry: ]
Hey Ben! I live in Burk but work in Lawton. Do you think this storm will cause I-44 to become too treacherous to drive to work Wednesday and Thursday?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:10 Larry
12:11
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
At least Wednesday I would not recommend travel further north! Thursday looks a mess too
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:11 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
12:11
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
But with this event by day 3 (Friday) we should see significant improvements with warmer weather

It is not clear to me as to how much Seymour is going to be affected. Will there be high winds to make for a cold chill factor?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:12 Judy S.
12:12
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Yes Judy. This event will be nearly as cold as the last one, but it won't last for as long! This weekend looks fantastic!

[Comment From Erin WErin W: ]
Does this look like the last bit of this kind of weather for this year?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:21 Erin W
12:21
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Erin, it is tough to say what will be happening 3 weeks from now, but starting this weekend a big shift in our weather pattern will take place so that we see warmer temps for at least a week or two

Possibly by Thursday, Wednesday looks like a no go. But hopefully the highways will be cleared on Wednesday afternoon at least enough to make them passable

[Comment From KristiKristi: ]
I will be coming in to W. F. from Henrietta at about 7 am tomorrow. I know the road conditions will be bad but what about visibility? How heavy will the snowfall be at that hour?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:23 Kristi
12:23
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Could still be heavy especially in Henrietta with maybe conditions improving throughout the drive. The heaviest snow may be done, but the winds will be a blowin' and visibility may still be bad

How much snow is expected for the Duncan area?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:24 Michelle
12:24
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
4-8" and it is more likely on the higher side of that range the further north you go!
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:24 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
12:24

[Comment From AllisonAllison: ]
Everyone will be tuned into you guys. Will you please add that pets must be brought in or sheltered out of the wind, in a CLOSED environment (dog house) with hay or straw for warmth. Animals will be in misery and can literally freeze to death in this weather. Please ask folks to watch for unsheltered animals. Thank you.
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:24 Allison
12:25
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Will do Allison! Always need to watch out for our furry friends!

[Comment From RachaelRachael: ]
What do you think we will get more of ice or snow?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:25 Rachael
12:25
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Rachael, this looks more like a quick rain to snow transition with little icing. I would say there is a better chance for icing in southern portions of Texoma. But it doesn't look like a threat as bad as the last event
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:25 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
12:26

[Comment From Erin WErin W: ]
I agree John!! This has been a great way to get our questions answered!

[Comment From ilcsmilcsm: ]
according to the weather channel. they are predicting 6-10" of snow right now for the wichita falls area, yet yall are only predicting 4-8? Is TWC information not up to date, as in has there been a change in change in the pattern the storms traveling?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:26 ilcsm
12:28
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Every meteorologist will have a different forecast, but I will say this, we are only looking out for Texoma, while TWC is forecasting for the entire country. I would think more than 8" in Wichita Falls is HIGHLY unlikely. However with the winds, drifts will be over a foot. Regardless of 4" compared to 8 or 10" it is going to be horrible road conditions
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:28 Meteorologist Ben Walnick

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]
Does the moisture we are seeing now relate to how our spring storm season is going to be?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:30 Guest
12:32
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
I would not relate the two. This weather pattern is downright strange compared to where we have been all Winter. We are in a La Nina, which typically means drier weather even in the spring. But I always have been a non-believer in trying to forecast months down the line... there is just too much uncertainty.

[Comment From C. DoswellC. Doswell: ]
Ben, what kind of snow will we have this time? Will it be wet and good for snomen... or powder like last time?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:41 C. Doswell
12:41
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Starting wet and turning dry. The type of snow is usually determined from air temperatures way above the surface and they will turn colder throughout the night

Ben.....What's the earliest we will see precip? And will it be rain or snow?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:42 Adele-TxDOT
12:43
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Might as well group these together: Yes I fear the roads will be bad again. The earliest precip could fall before 9PM but will be very light. Heaviest snow falls after 9-10PM and lasts until about sunrise tomorrow maybe an hour or two into the late morning
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:43 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
12:44
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
It looks to be mainly a snow event, but rain and sleet could briefly fall late in the evening. I think the snow transition happens faster than last week's storm

I said this on facebook earlier. If the forecast holds true... and I were a superintendent: I would expect schools to be canceled Wednesday and Thursday, with a delay on Friday. But again, I am not in that position so no promises :)

Would it be possible for you guys to do some kind of story on how to drive on this stuff.. I can NOT believe the number of crazy people here who don't know how to! When I got my license, my dad took me out in the first ice storm( it was BAD) and taught me how to drive on it. I feel confident I get through it, its all the other people I worry about
Tuesday February 8, 2011 12:58 Erin W

Yes....Ice can only be extracted from the roadway once we get a little bit of thawing between the pavement and ice. Then we need to use MAintainters to pick it off the roadway. Snowplows can't pick ice. It will ruin their blades.

Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Tracie, I don't think so, we should only be really cold for about 36 hours. Last event we were below freezing for more 100 hours!

Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Angie, hopefully we will see just snow and it will be easier for the road crews to clear it, but I would expect schools to be closed Wednesday and perhaps Thursday

I just got on here and would like to know how bad this storm is going to be. I hear 6-10 inches
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:36 John
1:37
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
I think 10 inches is a bit too high for us here in WF. 4-8" and I think 8" will only be in isolated locations. Hopefully if it is all snow then the roads will be easier to clear.

Do you anticipate icing before the snow?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:37 James
1:38
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
That is the million dollar question. Still looks like icing will be less than last time, but snow could be more. The icing is what causes the roads to be so bad. So it looks like the roads may be a bit better but still pretty bad for at least Wednesday

Why are we having two winter weather systems within a week of each other? Seems rare for this area of Tx.
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:40 Tracie in Electra

It is fairly rare, especially two strong systems like this. I grew up in Dallas and I can't recall seeing this is the past twenty years.

What happened to this past Sunday? I thought it was supposed to snow...? Can we be certain that it's actually going to snow tonight? =)
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:42 Shea
1:43
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Shea, Sunday was a borderline event all along. We said a trace to 2" and we just stayed too warm to see snow by just a few degrees. With the amount of rain we saw it would have been around 2" if we cooled down about 3 degrees. This system is extremely cold like the one last week so there is no doubt it will be mostly snow

Is it true that one inch of snow is equal to about one tenth of an inch of rain?
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:43 James

On average yes. Drier snow can be closer to a 15-1 ratio.

Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
Finally a tough question!
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:46 Meteorologist Ben Walnick
1:47
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
It all has to do with temperatures and the upper air winds in Canada. The cold High pressure builds and usually stays in Canada. But occasionally a strong Low pressure will move in off the coast of Alaska and push that cold high pressure and the jet stream down into the Plains

Angie: I have 2 kids that need to get to school tomorrow too. TxDOT will take care of the State/US highways first (I-44, US 287, and US 82). We've got 18 snowplows in Wichita County alone and 78 in the district. However, we won't be plowing city streets that lead to schools. That's the city's responsiblity. Snow...even wet snow...is easy to plow. It's the ice that can cripple a community.

Could this be the effects of Global Warming? (If you believe in Global Warming) Having two storms so close together
Tuesday February 8, 2011 1:51 Tracie in Electra
1:52
Meteorologist Ben Walnick:
I believe that climate change will cause more weather extremes. Whether it is due to us or due to a normal warming of the earth, it doesn't matter. Temperatures are climbing and that causes ocean temperatures to rise which causes stronger storm systems. I have no idea if that is why we are seeing two major storms, but it is worth pondering.
