Cody Slater Approved as Hirschi Coach

Last week Newschannel 6 reported that Hirschi was close to hiring Cody Slater as Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator.

Tuesday afternoon it became official.

Slater was approved by the WFISD School Board in a special session Tuesday, returning him to the place where he got his start as a coach.

Slater, an Olney native and MSU graduate, was a student teacher at Hirschi in 1998 and was hired as an assistant coach in 1999. He then served as offensive coordinator in 2000 for the Huskies, who went 5-5 as a class 4A team.

After stops all over North Texas, including five years as offensive coordinator and head baseball coach at his hometown school, Slater finally got his first head coaching job last season at Miles, near San Angelo.

He led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record and their first playoff win since 1967, when they were competing in 6-man football.

After the school board meeting, Slater said he was excited to be back.

"It's a great opportunity for me to come back to a place that I got my start," Slater said.

"We want to make sure that that tradition is built back there that they had in the 80's and late 90's, and make sure that we put Hirschi back on the map."
