The Wichita Falls High School Coyotes thought they had a golden opportunity Tuesday night to tie Little Elm for third place in District 4-4A, but struggles at the free throw line sabotaged their chances.
The Coyotes lost 61-56 at home to Denton, missing 27 of their 38 free throw attempts.
They went 4 of 20 from the charity stripe in the first half, when they could have put the game away.
Senior Devontay Chaffin led the Coyotes with 12 points.
Old High led by as much as ten points in the fourth quarter before Denton went on a run to take their own ten-point lead in the final frame.
The Coyotes cut the lead down to 2 before a three-point play by the Broncos sealed the game.
Later it turned out that even with a win, the Coyotes would have had to settle for 4th place, as Little Elm upset The Colony 70-65 to clinch third.
The Coyotes will face Amarillo Palo Duro in the Bi-District playoffs, but a time and date have not yet been announced.
The #4 Burkburnett Bulldogs finished the regular season in style Tuesday night, eclipsing the 100-point mark with a 101-40 victory at home against Vernon.
Jerard Graham led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Derrell Gibbs scored 11.
Burkburnett finishes the regular season 30-2, with a perfect 10-0 mark in District 6-3A.
