Sanctuary Cities Could Lose State Funding

In cost-cutting measure, a North Texas state lawmaker proposes to withhold tax dollars from cities and counties that officially ignore immigration laws.

Gov. Rick Perry has declared anti-"sanctuary cities" legislation an emergency issue.

This allows lawmakers to address the issue more quickly than the required 60 days necessary to consider legislation.

The bill would prohibit local government from adopting policies allowing them to ignore immigration matters.

If they do adopt an ordinance, the local government body would not be able to receive state grant money.

The Houston Chronicle reports the measure would also allow the state attorney general to force local governments to enforce state and federal laws.
