Falls Woman Celebrates 100th Birthday

Friends and family gathered Saturday to celebrate 100 years of life. Mamie Merritt of Wichita Falls added a third digit to her age Thursday.

Merritt has lived in the Falls for the last 60 years. She was born in De Kalb in 1911. Merritt worked as a housekeeper for private residences and hotels.

Loved ones surprised Mamie with a signed proclamation from Mayor Glenn Barham. The Mayor officially declared Feb. 17, 2011 Mamie Merritt Day.

Though she has no biological children, Merritt has one godson and, through him, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
