Texas Department of Criminal Justice Cutting From Budget

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is being it by the state's budget shortfall. The department has to cut $40 million from its budget.

Michelle Lyons, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice says 400 administration positions will be eliminated. No correctional staff or "front line parole staff" will be affected.

"Fortunately with this round of cuts, the units themselves have not been affected. We did not look to cut any correctional staff or any or our front line parole staff, we just looked at some of the administration positions," said Lyons.

"We are looking to reduce about 400 of those positions. So those individuals will be notified at the beginning of March that their job has been eliminated," said Lyons.

As of now, TDCJ employs 3200 administration people.
