Hundreds of Teachers Given the Pink Slip

Nearly 2,000 Rhode Island teachers are without a job Friday morning, sort of.

A city school's committee voted Thursday night to send termination letters to all 1,900 teachers in the district.

But that doesn't mean they will all be fired. Officials say the letters were sent because the mayor says the city has to notify teachers by March 1 about a possible employment change. The mayor says this gives them the most flexibility in determining their budget.

The school district faces a $40 million budget gap.
