Poll Finds Southerners Aren't Happy With Washington

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - A new poll says southerners don't like where Washington is headed.
A Winthrop University survey says a majority disapprove of President Barack Obama's job performance. Two-thirds disapprove of the job Congress does.

The poll released Wednesday also found 64 percent of respondents feel the country is going the wrong way. Winthrop political scientist Scott Huffmon says Obama's numbers aren't surprising in the strongly Republican South.

Democrats, Republicans and independents said the economy is the nation's biggest problem. But 37 percent felt the economy in the region is good or very good. Only 21 percent felt the same about the nation.

The telephone survey of 865 people in 11 states was taken last month. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
