Project in Work to Combat Distracted Teen Drivers

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - Consumer Reports and the U.S. Transportation Department are teaming up to make sure teenagers know about the dangers of distracted driving.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is visiting the magazine's New York headquarters Monday to unveil a joint project. It's aimed at helping parents and teachers fight a driving-while-texting trend that's hitting young people hard.

Consumer Reports notes three deadly statistics:

-Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens.
-Teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as other drivers.
-And texting multiplies by 23 the risk of a collision.

Also expected at the news conference is a young woman whose parents were killed in a crash with a driver who was talking on a cell phone.
