Burkburnett Advances to Finals With 77-68 Win

Things didn't come easy Thursday for the Burkburnett Dunkin' Dogs, but they don't give medals for things that are easy.

The #9 Bulldogs trailed #10 Mexia by as many as 8 points more than halfway through the third quarter, but they outscored the Blackcats 34-17 the rest of the way for the 77-68 win.

Jerard Graham led the Dogs with 24 points and four assists, while Derrell Gibbs added 18 points and eight rebounds.

Mario Garcia scored 15 points, while Michael Elphick tied Gibbs for the team lead with eight boards to go along with six points.

The Bulldogs will face #5 Corpus Christi West Oso in the State Championship game Saturday morning at 10 AM at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

Burkburnett was only 8 of 28 from the three-point line, but the ones they made were perfectly timed.

The first two came from Gibbs and Garcia in the first twenty seconds of the game, the only two makes in the first quarter.

The next came from Garcia and gave the 'Dogs a one-point lead with just over three minutes to play in the first half.

The fourth and final trey of the first half came from Andrew Runyon with two seconds left, again giving Burkburnett a two-point lead.

The last four all came in the third quarter: the first two, both by Jerard Graham, came in a ten-second span to cut Mexia's lead from eight to two.

The third, by Tyler Clement, broke a 54-all tie.

The eighth and final Burkburnett triple of the game was a buzzer-beater by Gibbs that effectively put the game away entering the final period, when the 'Dogs never led by less than four.
