MSU Mercy Rules Northeastern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 5 Midwestern State blasted three home runs and took advantage of six Northeastern State errors to roll to an 8-0 Lone Star Conference North Division win in five innings Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs (25-2, 3-1 LSC North) used the long ball to plate the first four runs of the game.

Brittney Tanner belted her third homer of the season over the left-center field fence to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the second.

It was all the support the senior starting pitcher would need in the circle as she fanned six of the first seven hitters she faced and yielded only a one-out single to center field to NSU starting pitcher Cayce Colemen in the top of the second inning.

Tanner didn't need any more help to improve to 15-2 on the season while notching 10 strikeouts in five innings, it sure didn't hurt.

Mallory Mooney belted a two-run shot to left field for her team-high sixth homer of the season to push the advantage to 3-0 in the third inning and Kim Jerrick led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast to center field for her fifth home run of the season.

MSU benefited from two Northeastern State miscues in the fifth to put away the game with four more runs in the frame highlighted by RBIs from Carey Campbell and Kristina Gutierrez.

Elena Bennett and Amanda Potysman joined Mooney to go 2-for-3 at the plate to lead MSU's 10-hit attack.

Coleman permitted eight runs - four earned - on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two talks to take the loss for the RiverHawks and fall to 5-5 on the season.

Midwestern State and Northeastern State close the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for noon.
