MSU Roundup: Tennis Splits, XC's Flores Takes Gold

No. 19 Northwest Missouri State made a slim 2-1 margin stand up for a 5-4 win over No. 29 Midwestern State Friday afternoon at the Tennis and Swim Club in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The Bearcats (10-2) claimed the top two doubles positions as Calvin Peterson and Vijit Sehgal outlasted MSU's Vjekoslav Stipanic and Luke Joyce 8-6 at No. 1, while Malcolm Harrison and Daniel Quesada upended Bo Zaputovic and Mario Urban 8-3 at No. 2.
 
The Mustangs (10-3) scored a win at No. 3 as Jarrod Liston and Chad Meeks doubled up Northwest Missouri's Philip Hultquist and Giovanni Auricchio 8-4 at No. 3 to pull MSU within 2-1 going into singles play.
 
And only two of those were decided in straight sets as NWMSU's 29th-ranked Harrison defeated Urban 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and MSU's Zaputovic ousted Hultquist 6-1, 6-3.
 
The rest of the four matches were settled in third-set tiebreakers with Mustangs notching a mild upset at No. 2 where Stipanic edged 53rd-ranked Patterson 5-7, 7-6, 10-5.
 
Midwestern also claimed the No. 6 match as Tiago Vilarinho defeated Auricchio 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, but the Mustangs couldn't find another win to overcome their deficit at the end of doubles play.
 
Northwest Missouri's Sehgal beat Joyce 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 3, while Quesada clinched the match for the Bearcats with a 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 decision over MSU's Rory de Boer at No. 5.
 
Midwestern State returns to the courts Tuesday afternoon against Tyler Junior College at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3 p.m.

MSU Women Take Shortened Win

No. 50 Midwestern State rolled to its third straight win with a 5-0 blanking of Northwest Missouri State Friday night at the Tennis and Swim Club.
 
The Mustangs rattled off three easy doubles victories as Alex Odell-Michels and Rozike Janzen van Rensburg beat Erika Leston and Leslee Feldhaus 8-2 at No. 1, Leah Roberts and Abbie Lewis took down Alexis Bartek and Emily Hoffman 8-2 at No. 2 and Ashley Huse and Lindsey Holcomb combined for an 8-4 win over Sureena Weir and Alison Wulff at No. 3.
 
MSU finished the match, which was called short due to the availability of two indoor courts at the Tennis and Swim Club, with two quick singles victories.
 
Van Rensburg defeated Northwest's Leston 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 and Roberts aced Weir 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
 
Odell-Michels led the No. 2 matchup 6-4, 3-4 when the match was ended.
 
The Mustangs (11-4) take on Tyler Junior College Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First service is set for 3 p.m.
 
Northwest Missouri State dropped to 4-6.

Cross Country's Flores Takes 1,500 M Gold in Denton

Ashley Flores highlighted a stellar showing for Midwestern State at the North Texas Open Friday afternoon at Fouts Field in Denton.

The freshman from Haltom City struck gold in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:53.55 to edge Tarleton State's Lindsey Hinton who logged a 4:54.96.

Flores led a pack of four Mustangs to finish in the top eight as freshman Janel Campbell claimed the bronze with a time of 4:58.93 followed closely by senior Sydnee Cole (4th place/4:59.00), freshman Cara Mack (6th/5:05.43) and junior Lindsey Pate (8th/5:09.73).

Mack, a Llano High product, also delivered a strong showing in the 800-meter as she finish fourth with a time of 2:29.00.

Pate finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:28.70.
