#3 Mustangs Claim MSU Invitational II Title

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's Kim Jerrick ripped homers in three consecutive at bats to lead the Mustangs to an MSU Invitational #2 title Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The freshman from Belle Plaine, Kan. helped the No. 3-ranked Mustangs finish off Delta State 10-0 with a grand slam in the sixth inning before launching a pair of two-run blasts in the first two innings of a 7-0 win over St. Edward's later in the afternoon.
The wins improved the Mustangs to 3-1 over the weekend as they claimed the tournament title by virtue of a head-to-head win over St. Mary's Friday afternoon as the Rattlers also compiled a matching 3-1 mark.
Midwestern (30-3) begins next week's Lone Star Crossover Tournament with No. 1 Angelo State Friday afternoon in San Angelo. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
The Mustangs used speed to get out in front of Delta State in the opener and then flexed for three homers to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore outfielder Elena Bennett drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, stole second and scored on Nicki Duff's RBI single up the middle to give the Mustangs the early 1-0 leads.
MSU pushed the advantage to 5-0 in the fourth as senior Amanda Potysman and Carey Campbell blasted two-run home runs.
Potysman tacked on another run on a single through the right side of the infield in the fifth inning to plate Megan Chartier, who came on to pinch run for Mallory Mooney.
The Mustangs would the bases in the sixth on consecutive singles by Bennett and Duff, and then Mooney drew a walk to set up Jerrick's grand slam to left field.
Senior Kristina Gutierrez weaved a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk to improve to 12-1 on the season.
Delta State's Brittany Gonzales (2-11) was saddled with the loss as the Lady Statesmen dropped to 9-19.
Jerrick stayed hot in the second game of the day against St. Edward's.
She drilled a 2-0 offering from Diana Cezeaux over the left-field fence for a two-run shot as part of a three-run MSU first inning, then jacked a 2-2 offering from Paige Sandahl again over the fence in the second inning to give the Mustangs a 5-0 advantage.
Midwestern tacked on a final two runs in the fifth inning on Gutierrez's pinch-hit two-run single to left field to close out the scoring.
Senior Brittney Tanner notched her eighth and the team's 16th shutout of the season by allowing three hits while notching eight strikeouts and three walks to improve to 18-2 on the season.
Cezeaux (7-7) took the loss for the Hilltoppers who fell to 20-15.
