MSU Golf: Kendra Whittley Makes NCAA Field

The news was bittersweet for the Midwestern State Mustangs on Monday afternoon as they learned that only one member of the team would be advancing to the NCAA Division II Championship this season.

The Mustangs just missed being selected to the West Regional field of nine teams, but had their top scorer, Kendra Whittley, selected as an individual.

Whittley, a sophomore from Wall, is seeded second among the individuals, after posting an average score of 76.82 for her 22 rounds in 10 tournaments this season. She was named second-team All-Lone Star Conference this season.

"Kendra has done a great job this season and will represent us well," said MSU golf coach Jeff Ray. "I am disappointed that the team didn't get in."

The Mustangs finished second at the Lone Star Conference Championships last week behind the top-seeded Tarleton State.

In addition to TSU, the field includes Grand Canyon (Ariz.), St. Edward's (Texas), Cal State-Monterey Bay, Northeastern State (Okla.), Central Oklahoma, Western Washington, Sonoma State (Calif.) and Nebraska-Omaha.

Individually, joining Whittley are Incarnate Word's Joanna De Sa Peirera, Dallas Baptist's Mercedes Rios and West Texas A&M's Alisa White.

The 54-hole regional, one of four in the championship, begins Sunday at the Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo and continues through Tuesday. The top three teams and top three individuals not from those teams advance to the NCAA Division II Championship on May 11-14 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
