Food Drive Helps Food Bank & Faith Mission

We're already a week into the Newschannel 6 Food For Families Food Drive, and we're still counting on you.  The benefits of donations to the area food bank trickle down to other charitable organizations in Texoma.

For example, Faith Mission in Wichita Falls purchases weekly food orders from the food bank, and the drive can help their choices.

"Many times it becomes kind of the same -- can of corn, bag of beans, things like that.  So when we have donations that come in that have such a variety  from the food bank, it gives us a better chance to serve a variety of meals," said Marketing Director Becky Browning

The need for meals is growing, too.  In April alone, the mission served about 300 more meals than it did in April of 2010.

"Maybe 80% of those people have never been at Faith Mission before, so it's a new group of people," Browning said.

People are often surprised at the number of children that come in for meals.  While the summer months see a lot of families who need food when their children are out of school, browning gives the reminder that the need is year round.

"These blitz fund drives and food drives are great in getting the word out.  But then they need to remember in the back of their mind that it goes on," she said.
