Texas DPS Remembers Fallen Officers

It is National Police Officer week and all across the country departments are honoring their fallen officers.
21 police officers and two Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol officers killed in the line of duty were honored Tuesday in Austin.
The DPS recognized the men and women and the families left behind during the DPS memorial service. Included was Corporal David Slaton who was killed last year in Montague County.
Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst said, "To me, today is a day to say our state doesn't work without you, there are sacrifices involved, and its dangerous. And, to the families here today, I am so sorry. My sympathy, my family's sympathy goes out to you."
All 23 names of the fallen officers were read in the somber ceremony. A portion of US Highway 81 has already been named in Corporal David Slaton's honor. He is also honored in a permanent memorial at the Bowie DPS Office.
