Immigration Bill Facing Changes in Texas Senate

An immigration bill has been diverted in the Texas senate.

The original bill would allow local police to question anyone they detain about their citizenship status.  It had already passed the house.  A key senate committee, however, voted to eliminate the police enforcement measure after citizens packed a committee room to testify against it.  The so-called sanctuary cities bill had been declared an emergency measure by Governor Rick Perry and had been the center of emotional and racially charged debate.
