For five-and-a-half innings, Burkburnett and Lubbock Cooper battled to a 1-0 stalemate in a Regional I-3A Semifinal matchup at Abilene Christian University.
The Lady Bulldogs had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. With Emily Jones on third, Paige Daino drew a walk. As she rounded first, Daino took off for second to draw the attention of the defense. Jones took off for home plate, but the Lady Pirates didn't fall for the play, gunning down Jones at home.
Burkburnett got a lucky break moments later. Kylee Trahan popped a ball high into the air. Lubbock Cooper pitcher Lauren Heinrich ran over to make the grab, but the ball popped out of her glove, allowing Daino to score and giving Burkburnett its 1-0 lead.
The two teams traded defensive plays through the next three innings.
In the top of the sixth, Burkburnett starting pitcher Brenna Hennan ran into some trouble, putting runners on first and second. Head coach Allen Hennan went to the bullpen, bringing in Trahan, who struck out Bree Coons to end the frame.
The momentum of getting out of the jam carried over into the bottom of the inning. Jones, Brooke Hennan and Daino all drove in runs to increase the lead to 4-0.
Hennan improves to 25-3 for the season. Burkburnett is now one step closer to the state tournament, advancing to the Regional Finals to face the winner of West against Greenwood.
Petrolia scattered nine runs and survived a six-run fourth inning from Haskell to take the first Game 1 of the pair's Region I-A Best of 3 Semifinal in Jacksboro.
The Lady Pirates led 5-0 before the six-run fourth, but after the Haskell scoring outburst, Petrolia answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Kenzie Payne drove in a pair, while Jamie Kowalick went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The two teams resume play tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., with a third game to follow 30 minutes later if necessary.
The #4 City View Lady Mustangs postponed and moved their Best-of-3 Region II-2A Semifinal Series against #7 Crawford.
Game 2 will now be at Abilene Christian University's Poly Wells Field at noon Saturday. If needed, Game 3 will be at 7:30 p.m.
