The No. 7 Burkburnett Lady Bulldogs needed to top No. 8 West twice at Byron Nelson High School today to keep their season alive. Burkburnett fell two innings short of reaching that goal.
Freshman Kylee Trahan started in the circle. After putting to aboard with one out in the top of the first, Trahan struck out the next two Lady Trojans to get out of the inning unscathed.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the first, when a bad throw to first allowed a pair of Lady Trojans to come home.
Burkburnett's bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth for a six-run explosion. Dalin Dehart started it off with a two-run triple. Brenna and Brooke Hennan each drove in a run next, then Trahan closed out the inning with a two-run double.
The Lady Bulldogs hung on to win 6-2 to force a decisive game 3 for the series.
Burkburnett's bats struck first in the second game of the day. Dalin Dehart, Brenna Hennan and Emily Jones each drove in a run in the bottom of the third.
West earned a run back off a Trahan wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
The freshman started the second game over Brenna Hennan because head coach Allen Hennan decided to stay with the hot arm.
In the top of the sixth, Trahan's arm might have ran out of gas. West tied it up with back to RBIs from Brooke Morrison and Taylor Sullins.
Jordan Horn then hit ball right back to a charging Jones a short. Her throw home took a bad bounce. Sullins scored, then Trahan appeared to tag out Ashton Crawford but the umpires called obstruction allowing that key run to score to make it a 5-3 game.
In the bottom half of the frame, Paige Daino ripped a ball down the right field line, scoring Jordyn Faulkenbery.
But 5-4 would be the closest Burkburnett would get, as West closed the game out in the bottom of the seventh.
