Windthorst Celebrates 119 Anniversary of Church

The Saint Mary's Parish in Windthorst celebrated their 119 birthday.  The day was fun-filled with food and festivities.  Parishioners tell Newschannel 6 this celebration brought out the entire town and even people from surrounding communities.

"It's the highest point in the county, it sits up on top of a hill and pretty much once you get to Archer County you can see the church," said Mark Veitenheimer, a church member who also sits on the financial council.

The State of Texas recognizes it as a historical site and to and to make sure it stays that way the community of Windthorst celebrated its birth with a variety of activities.

"We started off this (Sunday) morning with our dairy derby which is our little kids run then we also have a health walk and a 5K," said Gina Wolf.

"Windthorst is full of traditions and this is one of them," said Shelley Schlumpf

A 200 item auction lasted until the later evening hours and they hope it raises $50,000 to $75,000.

"The proceeds from our birthday celebration have been designated to go toward church improvements," said Veitenheimer.
