Mobster Whitey Bulger Arrested In California

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say fugitive Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger has been arrested by the FBI near Los Angeles after 16 years on the run.

The 81-year-old Bulger is wanted in connection to 19 murders. He has been linked to the 1981 shooting death of Tulsa businessman Roger Wheeler outside a Tulsa country club.

Santa Monica Police Sgt. Rudy Flores says his agency was informed of the arrest by the FBI Wednesday.

Flores says the FBI had been conducting a surveillance operation in the area.
Bulger has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for the 2006 film "The Departed." He and girlfriend Catherine Greig have been on the run since 1995.
