16-Year-Old Charged with Murder for Stabbing Death of Canava, 15

A 16-year-old boy faces murder charges for the death of 15-year-old Alex Canava. Canava died after spending 5 days in the hospital. He had been stabbed in the neck.

Police got a call June 23rd at about 11 p.m. in the 2700 block of Byrne Place. The caller said Canava was stabbed and was bleeding.

Sgt. Joe Snyder with the Wichita Falls Police Department said when police arrived on the scene Canava was lying in the street, bleeding profusely from the neck. "The first officer that got on scene determined the victim did not have a pulse and was not breathing," said Snyder.

Witnesses had been doing rescue breathing. The officer took over upon arrival, and placed pressure on the wound. Shortly thereafter, First Responders from the Wichita Falls Fire Department arrived. Canava was taken to the hospital.

Juvenile Detectives arrived on scene and at the hospital to investigate. Witnesses told them they had seen two boys fighting in the street. The fist fight escalated when the suspect pulled a knife from his clothing, witnesses said.

Officers at the scene worked to find the knife and the suspect. The alleged teen attacker was spotted around 11:30p.m. in the 1200 Block of Ridgeway. Snyder said he at first ran from officers, but was taken into custody 4 minutes later.

The 16 year old suspect was arrested on a complaint of Aggravated Assault. After Canava's death, Snyder said Detectives will be upgrading the charge to Murder. He remains in custody.

Newschannel 6 has uncovered information that appears to tell the back story. A Facebook page that appears to belong to Canava lists status updates and comments that seem to stage the fight. On the page Canava writes "Im on my way to the park and im creepin for tht *****." [sic]

Below in the comments, a second boy - who appears to be subject referenced - writes "West lynwood ***...byrne street ******." [sic] Canava then writes "‎1030 ***** go ahead and work out do what you need to do to be prapared tl get your ** whooped." [sic]. The exchange continues for several minutes. About the time of the attack, Canava apparently comments "Im on the street ***** come out side." [sic].

Previous posts, apparently by Canava indicate there is a history of violence between the two. A status from Thursday afternoon says "This ***** thinks he has hands after last time his lip nose and eye was blodded up as much as lil wayne lil ***** ***** ***** stupid i jope i catch his ***** ***." [sic].

Comments under that post indicate the two had met at the skate park. Several YouTube videos appear to show Canava performing tricks on a skateboard at the park. Several of the photos on Canava's apparent Facebook page show him in mid-air on a skateboard. Many of the posts on the Facebook page indicate the victim is an avid skater.

Canava's family will be looking into donation of the boy's organs.
