Electra Grass Fire Chars 200 Acres & Shuts Down 287

Highway 287 in Electra was shut down for two hours Sunday evening while a grassfire raged on SB 287 near the Business 287 exit in Electra.  Cars lined the highway on both sides of 287, with no where to go leaving people with no other choice but to sit and wait or stand and watch the thick smoke billow into the sky.

"The AC is on high and we're just sitting here.  I took a picture of my gas gauge when we started at 4:30 and we'll see what it's like when I get going again," said Terri Younger who was on her way to Amarillo before she had to stop.

Firefighters worked for several hours to contain it.  In total officials say 200 acres burned, two vehicles were destroyed, two structures like barns were charred, but most importantly that fire was nearly 100 percent contained at 10pm Sunday evening with no reported injuries.

Officials do not know the cause of the fire, but some firefighters will stay on scene through the night to mop up hot spots.  Agencies from Electra, Iowa Park, Punkin Center, Burkburnett, Wichita West, Kamay, Harrold and others in the area were on scene.
