Minnesota Facing Government Shutdown

Minnesota could be facing a government shutdown if Governor Mark Dayton and republican lawmakers don't strike a deal on a new state budget.

A shutdown would effectively symbolize the gridlock between the Democratic governor who wants taxes raised and the republican legislative majorities who refuse.

Today is the last day of the current 2 year budget cycle, and lawmakers met at 8p.m. yesterday to have 28 hours to avert the shutdown. Republicans pushed for the governor to call a special session to pass a "lights on" budget to keep the government open through midnight Friday, when the shutdown would start. The governor hasn't agreed to do so yet.

A shutdown wouldn't affect critical operations, but officials say Minnesota citizens will definitely notice. On Wednesday, a judge issued a bare bones list of services that are essential if state government does shut down Friday.
