Standoff Ends In Suspect Accidentally Shooting Himself

Young County Deputies are investigating a shooting incident that landed one man in the hospital.
Deputies went to a residence on FM 1768 and Campbell Road Wednesday morning.
They were advised 45-year old Lowell Johnston barricaded himself inside that home and had a gun. He was reportedly threatening to shoot law enforcement.
Deputies say they heard shots fired from inside the house.
A negotiator from the Texas Rangers was called in and was able to get Johnston to respond.
Johnston had made a hole in a window for a "throw phone" he was given by negotiators, but the hole was not wide enough.
Deputies say Johnston used the butte of his rifle to make the hole bigger. When the rifle discharged and shot him in the head.
He was stabilized at the scene then was taken by Air Evac to United Regional where is listed in serious condition.
