Eastside Shooting Investigation in the Falls

We have continuing coverage tonight on the Eastside shooting in the falls. Newschannel 6 learned the identity of the suspected gunman Wednesday. He is a 25 year old by the name of Demetrick Murray. A warrant for his arrest has been issued and police need you on the look-out.

Officers say Murray shot 24 year old Jamon Shaw yesterday afternoon at East 2nd and Pine Street. Officers say Shaw is in critical condition.  Once he's in handcuffs, Murray faces aggravated assault charges, and a $750,000 dollar bond.  Residents told Newschannel 6 the shots sounded like firecrackers.

Moments later, SWAT surrounded an apartment complex at Ridgeway and Maurine where officers thought the suspect had barricaded himself inside an apartment.  People who live there told Newschannel 6 they were shocked and worried when they saw law enforcement running through the complex.  And they all say it's time for a change in the community.

Maurine Street Apartments' Residents say the SWAT team moved in quick to search each apartment; a sight many have never seen before. One of its residents, Martin Montez says, "This is the first time this has ever happened. It kind of freaked us out. I don't know. It was emotional for everybody. There was a big old crowd out there yesterday."  Montez says it's a great community where trouble is not usually seen. He says, "Lots of kids out here. There's good people out here. And well, it just kind of freaked us out. We don't know what we should do about it."

Residents who heard the gunshots at East 2nd and Pine are terrified something like this could happen so close to home. But they're not giving up hope on their community. Resident Paula Jackson says, "The reason why I'm standing here today is I just want let people know, in this world, in this town, it's time for each and every one of us to love one another to look out for one another."  Jackson says it's time to stop hurting each other, and it's time for change. She says, "It's time to turn lives around. Make sure you get a job. Start going to church, and serving God because it's just too much killing, drugs, alcohol that's happening in the world today. And I just think everybody needs to get their lives changed."

Residents at East 2nd and Pine told Newschannel 6 they heard four gunshots.  Police say the shooting happened in the middle of the street. If you see Murray or know where he is, call Crime Stoppers at 322-9888.
