Case Against Polygamist Leader Begins Today

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) - Jury selection is the first challenge of what promises to be a complicated criminal trial for polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs.

The case of the 55-year-old ecclesiastical head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints begins today in San Angelo, Texas. But there are few in the remote West Texas town who haven't already heard of Jeffs. And thousands of pages of documents are in evidence.

Some 700 jury summons letters were sent and about 280 potential jurors are expected to show up. Jeffs is accused of two counts of sexual assault and could face life in prison. He will be tried for bigamy in October.

The charges stem from an April 2008 police raid on a church compound south of San Angelo.
