United Regional Medical Director Honored For His Work

A Medical Director at United Regional was honored Friday afternoon for his work with Texoma heart patients and around the nation.

Dr. Olyn Walker is retiring from United Regional. He is known as the first African American heart surgeon to perform open heart surgery in Wichita Falls.

He is also known as the first to instruct students in the cardio-vascular surgery military programs. Dr. Walker worked on two different Army centers in the country and served in the military for 20 years.

His colleague Nancy Townley spoke highly of Dr. Walker. "He actually also helped us develop our heart program. At that time, many new initiatives were being created for cardiovascular surgery, so he was on the forefront and has been a leader in our field for many years up to the present day, so we will certainly miss him."

Dr. Walker retired from open heart surgery in 2003, but has been working as Medical Director for the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab program at United Regional.
