AWOL Soldier Accused of Abandoning Baby Arrested

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a missing infant from Colorado has been found safe in Oklahoma and her father has been arrested on suspicion of abducting her.

Colorado Springs police say 24-year-old Derik Hembree was arrested Wednesday in Lawton, Okla., after he left the girl at a Lawton fire station.

Police say Hembree is a soldier who is absent without leave.

Oklahoma authorities tell KSWO-TV in Lawton that Hembree dropped off the child on Tuesday.

Lawton Police Lt. Bill Grimes says Hembree left a note with the child's name.

He says Lawton police were alerted earlier to be on the lookout for Hembree.

Colorado authorities say Hembree took 1-month-old Brooke on Aug. 4 in violation of a custody order.

Authorities are arranging to bring the baby back to Colorado.
