Alaska Gov. Parnell: Perry Credible Candidate In GOP Race

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell says Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a credible candidate in the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

Parnell was asked about Perry's candidacy and how the Republican field for the 2012 race was shaping up during a news conference Wednesday. Parnell noted that he can't blend campaign politics and state business but did say Perry brings a lot to the race.

Parnell said he has worked with Perry on resource development issues, and that the fellow Republican understands the need for energy development.

Parnell has been pushing the federal government, which controls most land in the state, to expand oil and gas development in Alaska.

Parnell became governor when Sarah Palin quit midway through her first term. She says she's also considering a presidential bid.
