Tropical Warnings For Gulf, Heavy Rain Expected

MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters say a tropical depression is moving very slowly through the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to drench much of the Gulf coast over the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center on Thursday night said the storm was about 225 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The maximum sustained winds were about 35 mph and it was barely moving northwest at about 2 mph.

Tropical storm warnings are out from Mississippi to Texas including New Orleans. It could bring up to 20 inches of rain to some areas along the coast.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Katia was spinning in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean and posed no immediate threat to land.
