Football Continues to Receive Votes in AFCA Top 25

Midwestern State is still receiving votes in the most recent American Football Coaches' Association Top 25 Poll released Monday afternoon.
The Mustangs received 10 fewer votes with five after a first-week bye.
Midwestern opens the season at Missouri S&T Saturday night in Rolla. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
The game can be heard locally on KWFB BOB-FM in Wichita Falls beginning with the Taco Casa Pregame Show at 6.
The Mustangs are one of 12 teams from NCAA Division II's Super Region 4 receiving mention in the poll which includes five from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, four from the Lone Star Conference, two from the Great American Conference and one out of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Northwest Missouri State moved up a place to No. 2 and received a first-place vote after thumping Truman (Mo.) 65-3.
The Bearcats are followed by Abilene Christian at No. 3. The Wildcats rallied before surviving a late Tarleton State surge for a 27-24 win Thursday in Stephenville.
Texas A&M-Kingsville bumped ahead a spot to No. 6 on the strength of a 21-10 victory at then-No. 22 Central Washington, while Central Missouri and Washburn (Kan.) moved ahead the places to Nos. 15 and 18, respectively.
Pittsburg State (Kan.) catapulted to No. 25 on the strength of a 34-7 win at Missouri Western.
Central Washington, West Texas A&M, Harding (Ark.), Henderson State (Ark.), MSU and Missouri Western are all receiving votes.

Volleyball Receiving Votes in AVCA Top 25

Midwestern State's strong play in its 3-1 showing at the MSU/Hampton Inn-vitational last weekend has the Mustangs receiving votes in the first regular season American Volleyball Coaches' Association Top 25 released Monday afternoon.
The Mustangs earned a straight-set win over then-No. 15 Truman (Mo.) before rolling to sweeps over Nova Southeastern (Fla.) and Texas A&M International. MSU's lone blemish came in a 3-0 loss to No. 5-ranked Washburn (Kan.).
Midwestern begins a busy week on the court with its Lone Star Conference opener against Eastern New Mexico Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
The Mustangs close the week with home league matches against Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday and Texas Woman's University on Saturday, but hit the road for a neutral site contest against Missouri Southern State Friday night as part of the Dallas Baptist Classic.
Midwestern State is receiving votes for the first time since opening the 2008 campaign with 18 consecutive wins. That season, the Mustangs carried a national ranking for the first time in program history reaching as high as No. 20. MSU received in the poll for six straight weeks from Sep. 8-Oct. 13, 2008.
Midwestern is one of eight teams from the rugged South Central Region to receive mention in the poll including No. 4 Washburn (Kan.), No. 8 Central Missouri, No. 17 Emporia State, No. 21 West Texas A&M, No. 22 Truman (Mo.) and No. 25 Abilene Christian while Angelo State and MSU are receiving votes.

Birdow, Maner, Silatolu Named 2011 Football Captains

Midwestern State seniors Tyler Maner, Kevin Birdow and Amini Silatolu were named team captains following a vote of teammates over the weekend.
Maner, a senior defensive back from Fredericksburg, has played in 24 games over the past three seasons. The 6-foot, 190-pounder is slated to make his first official career start at free safety in MSU's season opener at Missouri S&T on Saturday.
Birdow, a senior defensive end from Palestine, earned All-Lone Star Conference South Division honorable mention after making 35 tackles including three for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 6-2, 250-pounder has appeared in 33 games over the past three seasons with 14 starts.
Silatolu, a 6-3, 320-pound offensive lineman, anchors the offensive line after earning AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America first-team honors and receiving mention on three other All-America teams following his breakout junior campaign in 2010.
The Mustangs clinched their 11th consecutive winning campaign posting an 8-4 mark while making their third postseason appearance in the last four seasons in the 2010 Kanza Bowl.
