"I want people to see that there is something good on the east side, that there can be legit businesses," says Essie Robinson.
For the past several years Essie Robinson has wanted to open a bakery on the east side of town, a part of the Wichita Falls community she says was once an economically sound neighborhood.
"There were so many businesses. Flood street used to be one of the main streets and we had theaters, hotels, restaurants, it was just thriving,"she says.
It has been her dream to bring new life to the community by opening a business of her own in her neighborhood and after today she is one step closer. Just this morning the Wichita Falls City Council approved the rezoning of what will soon be her bakery, Cake's by Essie.
"Once that was over I was so overwhelmed with excitement. I didn't know whether to cry, I was praising God and just so happy that it was a step closer to my dream," Essie adds.
With the lack of businesses in this part of town she says it is her hope to be an example and that others in the community will be inspired to follow their business dreams and come together to restore their community to what it once was.
"I live on the east side and there is such a great need and I don't want to be one of those that just talks, I want to be able to do it and to show that this is my dream and my passion," she says, "I'm hoping that Cakes by Essie makes a difference to other businesses to come."
