UPDATE: Child Killed on 287

The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation into a hit and run that killed a young boy in Hardeman County Wednesday, November 2nd.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Tony Fulton told Newschannel 6 on today, November 9th, there is no new information to report.

He said a 12 year old boy was riding his bike when he was hit and killed sometime around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. It happened along the Northbound lanes of Highway 287 between Quanah and Chillicothe.

Trooper Fulton said the boy stopped at an all night rest stop before he was hit. An attendant at the rest stop asked the boy questions, but Trooper Fulton said the boy would not answer. Trooper Fulton said the attendant alerted the Hardeman County Sheriff's Office at 1:07 a.m.

Trooper Fulton said the boy was hit shortly after leaving the rest stop. Trooper Fulton said they do not know what type of vehicle hit the boy, but they do know the driver left the scene.

At 1:11 a.m. a woman called emergency officials to report the crash. Trooper Fulton said the woman was driving and saw the boy's body in the road, swerved to miss him and hit his bike. Trooper Fulton said the woman pulled over. She was questioned and cleared.

Trooper Fulton said after the woman pulled over a driver in a semi-truck hit the boy's body. That driver was also questioned and cleared. Trooper Fulton said the woman told troopers she believed the boy was dead before being hit a second time by the 18-wheeler.

Newschannel 6 is choosing not to release the boy's name out of respect for the family. Trooper Fulton said the boy is from Quanah. He said he was at his grandparent's house Tuesday night and went to bed at 9:30 p.m. Trooper Fulton said when his grandparents went to wake the boy Wednesday morning he was not there.

Newschannel 6 will continue to track this investigation as it develops.

The boy's funeral service was held this afternoon at the First Christian Church in Quanah.
