Fed Court Proposes Texas Congressional Districts

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas attorney general is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule redistricting maps issued by a federal court in San Antonio.

Attorney General Greg Abbott says the three-judge panel had crossed the line in producing maps that were dramatically different than those produced by the Legislature.

Several minority groups brought suit against the state over those maps, which they claim diminishes the opportunity for minority voters to choose a candidate that represents them.
Republican lawmakers reject that contention and insist the maps are fair.

But neither the Department of Justice nor a federal court in Washington would approve the maps, forcing the court in San Antonio to draft temporary maps. Abbott says the court's maps to too far in changing the maps.
